If you read about the
toxic gas theory, you will see
the connection between crib mattresses and the fire retardants which are leading
to the gas generation which leads to crib death. (Please remember that the gas
generation occurs when the sweat, drool, urine, etc. from the baby causes fungal
growth in the mattress. The fungus eats the fire retardant elements, releasing a
toxic nerve gas.)
You need to also be concerned about these fire
retardants in other furniture and baby items as well. Please make a note to
frequently wash the items that you can, or not to let your baby sleep on these:
-
Swing padding
-
Infant car seat or infant carrier- It is best
not to use the carriers that are removable from the car. The more time your
baby spends in this, the more dangerous it becomes. It is best to
wear your
baby when you are out and about.
-
Sofa, or other padded furniture
-
Pack and Play (a
BabeSafe cover is available for
these)
Another thing to look out for in the US is "100%
cotton" quilted fabrics. I don't know how they get away with it, but most of
these products are filled with polyester and NOT okay for a baby's blanket or
underblanket. It is very easy to tell the difference between cotton and
polyester fill. You are safest using simple 100% cotton flannel or cotton sherpa
blankets.
